Goods transporters have announced a wheel-jam strike from July 25.
In a press conference held by the Goods Transporters Association in Gujranwala on Tuesday, members announced a planned wheel-jam strike against the unresolved issues and demands from the transport sector.
Key demands and concerns
The goods transporters have laid out several key demands that they want addressed before they resume normal operations. They have announced that no bookings or deliveries will be processed until their demands are met.
1. The transporters are calling for a standardized system of weight measurement across Pakistan. They argue that the lack of uniformity in weight regulations creates inconsistencies and problems for the transport industry.
2. The association has requested the withdrawal of challaning powers from patrolling police. They have complained that the motorway police, patrolling police and traffic police issue unnecessary challans.
3. Transporters highlighted the issue of heavy fines, noting that those transporting goods from Karachi to Gujranwala face fines of up to Rs50,000. This, they argue, is excessive and burdensome.
4. There is a call for customs authorities to cease what they term as "illegal checking" of goods. The transporters believe that these checks are unfair and impede their operations.
The planned wheel jam strike will significantly disrupt the movement of goods across the country, impacting supply chains and potentially leading to shortages and delays in various sectors.
