Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced on Sunday its intention to file a formal reference against the Chief Election Commissioner and four other members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The decision follows growing discontent within the party regarding electoral processes and the commission’s conduct.
PTI founder Imran Khan has designated Barrister Ali Zafar to represent the party in this high-stakes legal move. The reference, which is scheduled to be submitted to the Supreme Judicial Council on Monday, seeks the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner and his colleagues from their positions.
The PTI’s reference will outline several grievances. Key issues include the alleged revocation of election symbols granted to PTI, concerns over an uneven playing field in the elections, and delays in holding general elections.
Additionally, the reference will address changes made to the Election Tribunal in Islamabad, which PTI contends were unjustified.
Further, the party plans to critique the ECP’s interpretation of a recent Supreme Court judgment, arguing that the Commission has misrepresented several aspects of the ruling.
Specific points related to the Supreme Court’s directives on reserved seats will also be scrutinised in the reference.
