Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has finally addressed the swirling rumours about his alleged marriage to renowned tennis star Sania Mirza.
The cricketer expressed his dismay over the fake news, urging people to act responsibly on social media.
The rumours, which surfaced a month ago, claimed that the sports celebrities were planning to tie the knot on August 20, 2024. These claims were propagated by several Indian websites including Masala, Times Now, and Zoom, accompanied by photoshopped images of Shami and Mirza.
Imran Mirza, Sania's father, had already dismissed the rumours in June. "All of this is rubbish. She hasn't even met him," he told journalists on June 21.
Breaking his silence after about a month, Shami found it strange to see his picture with someone he has never met. In response to a query about the rumours, he commented, "I believe that memes are meant for fun, but if it is related to someone's life, then one should make memes with a lot of consideration. People share such news from unverified pages and get away."
In an interview with a YouTuber, the fast bowler described the situation as weird and intentional for some "lame fun". Shami warned those spreading fake news, saying, "If you have the guts, then speak from the verified pages, then I will tell you."
He further added, "It is very easy to pull someone's leg. You first work hard, achieve success, raise your level and help someone only then I will believe you are a good person.”
