Despite a significant increase in budget allocations, the Punjab Police has struggled to control crime rates over the past five years. Financial support for the force has seen a dramatic rise, but crime statistics reveal a concerning trend.
Since 2019, the Punjab Police budget has increased by 75%. The 2019 budget stood at Rs111.78 billion. By June of this year, the police had already spent over Rs195 billion. This budget includes Rs530 million in transportation expenses and an annual petrol expense of Rs10 billion.
Despite the substantial increase in funding, the police have not succeeded in curbing crime. Over the past five years, the crime rate has increased by 226%. This alarming rise calls into question the effectiveness of the financial investments made to enhance the police force's capabilities.
The significant rise in the police budget was expected to bolster law enforcement efforts, improve safety, and reduce crime. However, the escalating crime rates indicate a disconnect between the financial resources allocated and the outcomes achieved.
