The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has announced that Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the Indian cricket team in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 and the Champions Trophy 2025.
Shah expressed confidence in Sharma's leadership, citing his recent success in ending India's 11-year ICC trophy drought with a T20 World Cup victory against South Africa in Bridgetown.
Rohit Sharma, who assumed captaincy in 2021 following Virat Kohli's resignation, has led India to significant achievements, including reaching the finals of the WTC 2021-23 and the ODI World Cup 2023, though both ended in losses to Australia. Sharma's tenure saw a resurgence in India's competitive spirit on the international stage.
Shah's announcement also highlighted Sharma's retirement from T20 Internationals (T20Is) alongside Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja after the triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. The victory was dedicated to the trio and former head coach Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concluded with the T20 World Cup final.
In a video shared by the BCCI, Shah praised the team's performance and expressed optimism for the future. "I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy," he stated. Shah also reflected on India's recent finals appearances, acknowledging the heartbreaks but emphasizing the team's resilience and potential.
"Many congratulations to Team India for this historic victory. I want to dedicate this victory to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. This was our third final in the last year. In June 2023, we lost in the final of the World Test Championship. After ten wins in November 2023, we won hearts but couldn't win the cup,” Shah added.
Shah also commended key players like Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya for their contributions to the T20 World Cup win. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in Sharma's ability to lead India to further glory. “After this victory, the next stage is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I am confident that we will become champions in both these tournaments under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma."
