In a tragic incident in the Netherlands, a gunman unleashed a deadly rampage, resulting in multiple casualties in Rotterdam. The assailant, a 32-year-old university student, first targeted a 39-year-old woman in his neighborhood, fatally shooting her and seriously injuring her 14-year-old daughter.
Following this, he set fire to the woman's house and proceeded to the Rotterdam Medical Centre university hospital.
Inside the hospital, the gunman entered a classroom and opened fire, killing a 46-year-old teacher. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended the assailant near the hospital, where he also ignited a fire. The motive behind this horrifying act remains unknown.
Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb expressed shock over the incident, acknowledging the profound impact on the city's residents. He extended his condolences to the victims and their families.
According to Rotterdam's chief prosecutor, Hugo Hillenaar, the suspect had a prior criminal record, having been prosecuted and convicted for animal abuse in 2021.
Videos circulated online captured the intense police response, with heavily armed officers guiding students, some in medical attire, to evacuate the area. One video showed the detained suspect wearing what appeared to be military-style clothing.
Authorities have not reported any evidence of a second shooter in the incident.
