On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Mark Rutte on being appointed as NATO's new secretary-general, according to Anadolu Agency.
According to a statement released by Turkey's Communications Directorate, Erdogan spoke with Rutte over the phone.
During the conversation over the phone, Erdogan wished Rutte success in his new position, and Rutte expressed gratitude for Erdogan's support.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of his Justice and Development (AK) Party's parliamentary group in the Turkish capital Ankara, Erdogan said he congratulated Rutte on his new role over the phone.
Erdogan stated that they intend to meet in Washington, while Rutte stated that he intends to visit Turkey regardless of whether they meet in Washington.
NATO allies have named outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the military alliance's next secretary-general, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
Rutte will enter office on October 1 and become NATO's 14th secretary-general when Jens Stoltenberg's term ends after ten years in charge of the alliance.
