Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz led-Punjab government announced on Saturday the implementation of a state-of-the-art computerized system for issuing vehicle fitness certificates across the province.
Spearheaded by Senior Secretary Punjab Marryium Aurangzeb the initiative aims to combat toxic emissions from vehicles and contribute towards a cleaner, smog-free Punjab.
Under the new system, every vehicle in Punjab will be linked to a unique QR code, which will serve as its digital identity. This QR code, renewable annually, will be pivotal in monitoring vehicles for emissions and engine integrity, ensuring that only environmentally compliant vehicles ply the roads.
Addressing the media, Senior Secretary Marryium Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of the initiative in the broader context of environmental protection. "This initiative marks the second phase of our comprehensive action plan against vehicles emitting toxic fumes," she stated. "It is a crucial step towards fulfilling our commitment to a smog-free Punjab."
Furthermore, the implementation will integrate monitoring mechanisms through Safe City cameras to track vehicles emitting smoke, ensuring strict compliance with emission standards.
"The QR-based system will not only streamline the process of issuing fitness certificates but also reinforce our efforts in creating a sustainable environment," added Marryium Aurangzeb.
The initiative comes in line with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's vision for a pollution-free Punjab, underscoring comprehensive measures against industrial emissions, kiln operations, and improper waste disposal. "Everyone must contribute to improving our environment," emphasized Marryium Aurangzeb, highlighting the collective responsibility in achieving environmental goals.
In addition to the new system, the Punjab government has escalated fines for environmental violations, demonstrating its commitment to enforce regulations effectively. The integration of Environment Protection, Police, and Traffic personnel in the certification process further ensures stringent adherence to environmental standards.
