Israr Kakar, a student from Pakistan has been elected as President of the Oxford University Union.
Israr won the Oxford University Union election with 617 votes. While his candidate rival Izzy Horrocks Taylor got 393 votes.
The full breakdown of results is as follows:
President-elect: Israr Khan – 617
Librarian-elect: Rachel Haddad Moskalenko– 524
Treasurer-elect: Moosa Harraj – 545
Secretary: Siddhant Nagrath– 552
Rachel Haddad Moskalenko, Moosa Harraj, and Siddhant Nagrath won the elections for Librarian, Treasurer, and Secretary. This marks the first time the Union’s four senior officers will all be from BAME backgrounds.
The acronym BAME stands for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and is defined as all ethnic groups except White ethnic groups and it does not relate to country origin or affiliation.
Israr tributes his remote village on victory
He wrote in the tweet: “This victory is beyond my imagination while belonging to a remote village in Balochistan on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. I am extremely grateful to the members of the Oxford Union and to my team for electing me as President and trusting me.”
