Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has alleviated concerns regarding the solar net metering policy, stating that no changes are being made to the existing framework.
He addressed the Senate session, chaired by Sherry Rehman, in response to attention notices raised by Owais Leghari.
The minister clarified that there have been no discussions or decisions made to discontinue the solar net metering system at any level. In fact, he highlighted that the uptake of solar net metering has significantly increased over the past five to six years.
He attributed this growth to the substantial decrease in solar panel prices in Pakistan, making renewable energy a more viable option for citizens.
The minister also assured the Senate that the government has successfully managed the revolving energy debt, preventing it from escalating further.
Leghari emphasized that the government has been actively exploring reforms in the power sector, including an agreement between Solar Net Metering and Nepra (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority).
This collaboration ensures that the purchase and sale of energy will be conducted under a single contract, streamlining the process.
The minister welcomed investments in the solar sector, reiterating that the current net metering policy remains unchanged. He assured the Senate that any future modifications to the policy will be made in a transparent manner, keeping stakeholders informed.
