Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday constituted a committee to draft a bill addressing social media regulations.
Addressing a presser in Islamabad, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar announcing the formation of committee noted that many countries have already enacted legislation to govern social media.
The newly formed committee, sanctioned by the cabinet, will be chaired by advisor to premier Rana Sanaullah.
This body is tasked with engaging in consultations with various stakeholders to formulate comprehensive proposals for the proposed legislation.
Journalistic bodies voice concerns
Journalistic organisations have previously voiced their concerns regarding the establishment of a Digital Media Authority, fearing potential overreach and unilateral actions by the government.
In response, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar assured that the government has no intention of bypassing the established consultative process.
During a meeting with officials from the National Press Club Islamabad, Attaullah Tarar reiterated the government's commitment to inclusivity.
He assured that all journalistic organisations and press clubs would be involved in discussions to ensure that the legislation is balanced and takes into account the concerns of all relevant parties.
