The city of lights finds itself in the grip of an unprecedented heat wave as temperatures soar to record-breaking levels for the month of May, announced the meteorological department.
The Early Warning Center of the Meteorological Department has forewarned that Karachi is set to endure scorching temperatures for the foreseeable future, with air humidity levels anticipated to surpass normal thresholds.
Forecasts indicate that central Sindh districts could experience temperatures exceeding a blistering 47 degrees Celsius in the coming days, amplifying the intensity of the ongoing heat wave.
Yesterday, the metropolis experienced a sweltering day, with the mercury peaking at 36.9 degrees Celsius. This reading surpasses the average May temperature by 1.1 degrees Celsius, marking a new high for the month.
Despite the stifling conditions, the Meteorological Department notes that the presence of a 21 km per hour wind prevented the situation from escalating into a full-blown heat wave. Nonetheless, the air's moisture content surged, with Wednesday afternoon witnessing a 5% increase in humidity, reaching a level of 59%.
The previous night saw humidity levels soaring to 75%, exacerbating the perceived heat and discomfort. Consequently, daytime temperatures felt even more elevated than the recorded maximum of 36.9 degrees Celsius.
This latest spell of scorching weather underscores the pressing need for Karachi's residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and to stay hydrated as the city braces for days of relentless heat ahead.
