Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Engineer Khurram Dastgir on Sunday expressed his firm belief that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif holds the key to steering Pakistan out of its current quagmire.
In an exclusive interview with Samaa TV's program "Samaa Debate," Dastgir remarked, "There can be no perfection in politics; only Nawaz Sharif can get this country out of trouble."
The PML-N stalwart also cast doubt on the efficacy of the incumbent government in addressing Pakistan's multifaceted challenges.
"The question is very difficult," Mr Khurram reflected, "that instead of Nawaz Sharif, the current Prime Minister can take the country out of crises, and the challenge may also be difficult for Shahbaz Sharif."
Regarding Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan, he underscored the significance of border sanctity, cautioning that neglecting to establish the Durand Line's sanctity could imperil bilateral ties.
"If they do not establish the sanctity of the border, things will not go well with Afghanistan," he warned.
Furthermore, Khurram Dastgir advocated for structural reforms within Pakistan's anti-corruption apparatus, advocating for the abolition of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in favour of consolidating anti-corruption efforts under the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
He stressed the importance of accountability, particularly in addressing historical grievances such as the May 9 tragedy, warning of potential repercussions if justice remains elusive.
Reflecting on his parliamentary stance, Mr Khurram disclosed his opposition to General Qamar Javed Bajwa's extension as Chief of Army Staff, citing his abstention from voting during the parliamentary session.
He also linked past security lapses, such as the attack on Pakistan Television (PTV), to subsequent tragedies, highlighting the need for swift and decisive accountability measures to avert future crises.
