Formula One aficionados may soon witness the spectacle of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton tearing through the bustling streets of Bangkok, as Thailand expresses its eagerness to join the F1 circuit.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin played host to F1 bigwig Stefano Domenicali on a pivotal Monday meeting, where he laid out the government's ambitious plan to bring the roaring engines and adrenaline of a grand prix to the sprawling urban labyrinth of the Thai capital.
While specific timelines and blueprints remain under wraps, Thai officials have hinted at the possibility of a street circuit weaving through the historical heart of the city, promising a thrilling spectacle for both drivers and spectators alike.
"Thailand stands ready to embrace Formula One in the heart of Bangkok," Srettha announced on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, following his high-stakes rendezvous with Domenicali.
"Should we succeed, I am confident that our nation will etch unforgettable memories for all, fueled by our inherent potential, capabilities, and the warm hospitality of the Thai people."
Srettha's administration is strategically pursuing "soft power" endeavours to bolster Thailand's global standing, with an F1 extravaganza poised to inject fresh momentum into the country's tourism sector as it rebounds from the shadow of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Formula One itself is eager to expand its footprint with more urban races, aligning seamlessly with Thailand's ambitions.
"In essence, if Thailand is to host F1, it must be on the city streets... our efforts are currently underway," affirmed government spokesman Chai Watcharong in discussions with local media.
At the heart of this burgeoning excitement is Alex Albon of Williams, the sole Thai contender in the F1 arena and only the second driver in the kingdom's history to grace the prestigious stage. With his prowess on the track, Albon symbolises Thailand's burgeoning presence in the realm of motorsport, lending further credence to the nation's aspirations to host its very own grand prix.
