In Srinagar, Kashmir, today marks the 31st anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Abdul Ahad Guru, affectionately remembered as Shaheed Hikmat. Born on November 24, 1939.
Beyond his medical achievements, Dr. Guru was deeply engaged in Kashmir's political landscape. He was an active member of Tehreek Azadi Kashmir and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, advocating fiercely for the rights of his people. However, his outspokenness against human rights violations in Kashmir drew the ire of the Indian government.
Tragically, Dr. Guru paid the ultimate price for his courage. On April 1, 1993, his tortured and bullet-riddled body was discovered in Srinagar's Bachpura area. Investigations by Asia Watch and Physicians for Human Rights pointed fingers at the Indian government, alleging his assassination as an extrajudicial killing. Amnesty International echoed this sentiment, condemning his death.
Former Indian minister Wajahat Habibullah shed light on the government's involvement, suggesting Dr. Guru was targeted as part of a larger scheme. His fearless identity posed a threat to Indian forces, leading to a violent aftermath even at his funeral.
Today, Kashmiris honor Dr. Abdul Ahad Guru's unwavering commitment to their cause. His legacy as a martyr and a freedom fighter continues to inspire generations, symbolizing the resilience of Kashmiri spirit in the face of adversity.
