Tech giant Xiaomi has officially entered the electric vehicle (EV) race, unveiling its first car, the "SU7," in a star-studded Beijing launch event.
This marks a significant move for the company, best known for its affordable smartphones and home appliances, as it takes on established players like BYD and Tesla in the world's largest car market – China.
China's EV sector is booming, but it's also fiercely competitive with numerous local manufacturers battling it out on price. Xiaomi is aiming to disrupt this market with the SU7, promising a feature-packed electric car at a starting price of 215,900 yuan ($29,868). This undercuts Tesla's Model 3, making the SU7 a potentially attractive option for budget-conscious EV buyers in China.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun boasted that the SU7 will be the "sexiest-looking, best-driving, and smartest car" in its price range. The car will be available in nine colors and even boasts some unique features like karaoke facilities and a mini-fridge, catering to a younger generation of car buyers.
Analysts believe Xiaomi's experience in consumer electronics will benefit its EV strategy. The company's success with affordable and feature-rich smartphones suggests they might be able to replicate that formula in the car market. Lei Jun himself is confident, claiming the SU7 can compete with and even surpass Tesla's Model 3 in some aspects.
With the SU7, Xiaomi throws down the gauntlet in China's already crowded EV market. Whether they can carve out a niche with their budget-friendly approach and unique features remains to be seen, but this launch certainly adds another exciting player to the electric car race.
