In a significant development in the long-standing domestic violence case filed against renowned Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, a lower court in Kolkata granted bail to Shami and his elder brother, Mohammed Hasib, on Tuesday.
The case dates back to March 2018 when Hasin Jahan accused Shami of physically assaulting her following her protest against alleged 'extra-marital' affairs. Subsequently, the police had interrogated Shami and his brother and even issued an arrest warrant against them, which was later stayed by a lower court in Kolkata.
Jahan had pursued legal recourse by approaching the Calcutta High Court, challenging the lower court's order. However, the high court upheld the lower court's decision. Undeterred, she took her case to the Supreme Court, which recently redirected the matter back to the same lower court, instructing it to arrive at a final decision after hearing all involved parties.
In the recent proceedings at the lower court, Shami and his brother appeared, and their lawyer moved a bail petition, which was eventually granted, allowing them temporary freedom while the case continues.
Earlier this year, in January, the court had ordered Shami to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 1.30 lakh to Jahan, with Rs 50,000 designated as personal alimony and the remaining Rs 80,000 allocated for the maintenance of their daughter, who resides with her.
The case has garnered substantial media attention and is expected to continue to be closely followed as it progresses through the legal system. Mohammed Shami's bail represents a pivotal development in this ongoing legal battle.
