Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized on Tuesday that sustainable peace in the region hinges on controlling terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil.
Speaking at the International Speakers Conference in Islamabad, he praised the armed forces for their exemplary performance in responding to recent border attacks.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recalled that in May, Pakistan faced unprovoked aggression from the eastern front. He highlighted that the country’s armed forces demonstrated exceptional preparedness and professionalism, delivering a decisive response to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He stated, “Our forces thwarted the enemy's intentions with their best professional performance, showing the world that Pakistan will pay any price to defend its homeland.”
Emphasis on peaceful neighbourhood
Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful neighborhood, emphasizing ongoing diplomatic efforts. He said sustainable peace is only achievable if extremist groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), are brought under control in Afghanistan.
He also appreciated the cooperation of regional countries in facilitating dialogue between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban and expressed readiness to collaborate further if the Afghan government takes effective action against terrorist groups.
Linking peace to development
PM Shehbaz stressed that peace and stability are fundamental to sustainable development. He underlined that repeated anti-peace activities have challenged Pakistan’s growth, but development is only possible in a secure society.
“Peace and stability form the foundation of sustainable development,” he said, highlighting that Pakistan continues to focus on economic reforms, ease of investment, and environmental sustainability in collaboration with global partners.
Shehbaz Sharif also outlined domestic initiatives aimed at empowering youth and women. The government is promoting digital skills training for women, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and creating employment opportunities. He emphasized equal access to opportunities and financial facilities as crucial to Pakistan’s socio-economic growth.
The Prime Minister warned that extremist groups not only threaten Afghanistan’s peace but also pose risks to the wider region. He urged regional cooperation to ensure a stable Afghanistan, highlighting its importance for development, prosperity, and constructive regional relations.
