Lionsgate has officially confirmed the development of John Wick: Chapter 5, but the biggest question remains: Will Keanu Reeves return?
Lionsgate executive Jenefer Brown revealed that the John Wick universe is expanding, with plans for additional films, spin-offs, a TV series, and even a video game.
"We are developing a fifth John Wick film… [John Wick] may be [dead]. We are all on bated breath waiting to find out," Brown stated.
The upcoming spin-off Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, is set between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. This allows room for Keanu Reeves to appear, but it doesn't confirm his return for Chapter 5.
Did John Wick survive?
Although John Wick: Chapter 4 hinted at the character’s demise, it left room for ambiguity. However, Reeves himself has been clear about his stance.
“The character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4,” Reeves stated in an interview, adding that there were "no plans" for a return.
Producer Basil Iwanyk acknowledged the physical toll the role has taken on Reeves, "By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him."
In December 2024, Reeves further emphasized the challenges of continuing the action-heavy franchise, joking,
"You can never say never, but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick.’"
What’s next for Keanu Reeves?
While his John Wick future remains uncertain, Reeves has several upcoming projects, including:
- Ballerina (John Wick spin-off)
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (voicing Shadow)
- Good Fortune, a comedy-drama directed by Aziz Ansari, where he plays a guardian angel
Will Reeves return?
The official development of John Wick 5 leaves Reeves' return uncertain. While the Ballerina spin-off could provide an opportunity for him to reappear, his statements suggest that he’s ready to move on—unless, of course, the right opportunity convinces him otherwise.
