New Zealand failed to capitalise on a solid start and ended day one of the third Test against England in Hamilton with a score of 315-9.
Openers Tom Latham (63) and Will Young (42) put on a strong 105-run stand, but New Zealand lost momentum after lunch. Six wickets fell for just 89 runs at Seddon Park as England’s seamers, led by Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson, fought back.
Potts (3-75) removed Latham and Kane Williamson (44), while Atkinson (3-55) impressed, taking three wickets. "The character's real strong," said Potts. "If we stick to our guns, we know it will come our way."
Late hitting from Mitchell Santner (50*) gave New Zealand a boost, including a six off the final ball of the day. England’s disciplined seam attack kept the pressure on throughout the day, with Atkinson surpassing 50 career wickets.
The middle order, including Rachin Ravindra (18), Daryl Mitchell (14), and Tom Blundell (21), struggled with reckless shots, contributing to New Zealand’s collapse. Santner acknowledged England’s persistence, saying, “I think Tom and Will did an outstanding job before lunch, and credit to England, they bowled good areas.”
Veteran Tim Southee marked his 107th Test with a quick-fire 23 off 10 balls, including three sixes. He is now closer to becoming the fourth player to clear the ropes 100 times in Tests.
