In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Karachi, successfully performed surgery to separate two-month-old conjoined twins from Naushahro Feroze.
The complex operation lasted 10-12 hours and involved a team of 10 medical professionals, including four expert surgeons from major hospitals across Karachi.
The twins, named Naila and Shumaila, were born on September 10 in a private hospital. Their grandmother said the girls' parents, Ghulam Mustafa and his wife, faced financial difficulties in arranging for the surgery. However, an NICH official said the hospital administration covered all the expenses.
Specialists from NICH, Aga Khan University Hospital, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), and the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN) collaborated on the procedure. Private hospital experts were also consulted during the planning stage, NICH Executive Director Dr Nasir Suddle said.
“The surgery was challenging but successful, thanks to the teamwork and expertise of everyone involved. The health of both girls is good,” said Prof Suddle.
The twins' grandmother expressed gratitude to the medical team and supporters. “We had no money for the operation. I thank everyone who helped us and the doctors who worked so hard to save our girls,” she said.
