Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President and former premier Nawaz Sharif has stressed the need to improve relations between Pakistan and India, noting that past tensions should not be an obstacle to future cooperation.
Mr Sharif expressed optimism that both countries could mend their ties, particularly in the context of upcoming international sporting events like the Champions Trophy 2025.
Speaking to the media after his arrival in London from Geneva, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sharif remarked that improving bilateral relations with India is achievable.
“If relations with India have deteriorated in the past, then they need to be mended. I don’t see any difficulty in doing so,” he said.
Sharif also expressed regret over India’s decision to not participate in the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan. "It would have been good if the Indian team had come to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy," he added, expressing hope that such opportunities for collaboration would arise in the near future.
"Hopefully, such a time will come soon," Sharif said, referring to the potential for increased sports diplomacy between the two nations.
Former PM Sharif also reiterated that Pakistan should maintain cordial relations with all its neighbors, including India, and with global powers such as the United States.
“Pakistan should have good relations with America, and the same applies to India. Relations with neighbors are important for regional stability,” Sharif stressed.
Nawaz Sharif also took a moment to comment on the state of domestic politics, criticizing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party for fostering a "culture of misbehavior" in the country.
"The foundation of the culture of indecency has been laid," he remarked, accusing PTI of encouraging disrespectful behavior, particularly among the youth. He pointed out that during PTI’s tenure, young people were often seen running behind vehicles, an image he described as unbecoming for the country.
Economic recovery under PML-N leadership
On the economic front, Mr Sharif highlighted the positive developments in Pakistan’s economic recovery. He stated that inflation is on the decline and the economy is steadily improving, thanks to the efforts of the PML-N-led government.
He credited Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for taking significant steps to reduce the prices of essentials like flour and bread. “After six to seven years, Pakistan is now on the path to development again,” Sharif concluded.
Smog Crisis and Future Plans
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also addressed the issue of smog, which continues to affect Punjab, particularly during the winter months. She acknowledged that the problem cannot be solved overnight but expressed confidence that long-term solutions would eventually resolve the crisis.
“The smog problem will be solved in a few years,” Maryam Nawaz said, highlighting the provincial government’s commitment to addressing the environmental issue.
