Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarrar on Friday said he would not entirely reject the proposal of the tenure extension of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) in the context of reforms on the appointment of judges.
Sharing his viewpoints on the law reforms being considered by the new government of PMLN, Azam Nazir Tarrar said that the status of the parliamentary committee on the appointment of judges was no more than a ‘rubber stamp’.
Azam Nazir Tarar confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed constitutional amendment for the appointment of judges and emphasized there should be a balance in the system of appointing judges.
“After the 19th Amendment, the status of the parliamentary committee became a rubber stamp. In the 18th Amendment, a balance was kept in the appointment of judges,” he added.
Proposals related to the tenure of the Chief Justice are circulating. I will not entirely reject the suggestions related to the tenure of the Chief Justice.
“The basic idea of the 18th constitutional amendment was very beautiful,” Tarar said.
“We will discuss this issue with the opposition," he said.
He clarified that the Law Ministry has not been told anything about the tenure of the Chief Justice
Regarding the tenure of the Chief Justice, Azam Nazir Tarar said: “I am also listening to suggestions.”
The minister explained that in many countries of the world, the role of the judiciary is very small in the appointment of judges
The law minister declared that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is not entitled to any specific seat (in the parliament).
It is pertinent to note that PTI spokesperson and central information secretary Raoof Hasan earlier held a press conference and made it clear that the party would strongly resist any such move to extent tenure of CJP.
