ISLAMABAD: Amid strong opposition of MPs from government and opposition parties on Dual Nationality Bill, Senate’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice postponed its scheduled meeting on Wednesday.
According to sources, ANP’s Senator Haji Adeel and Federal Law Minister Farooq H. Naek discussed the matter and made some progress.
Haji Adeel said the government has agreed to maintain a ban over appointments of dual nationality holders on top political and administrative posts.
“Our demand is that one, who is elected as the Member of the Parliament (MP), should give up his/her dual citizenship,” he said.
Senator Adeel said the committee is yet to get details about the dual nationality agreements Pakistan had signed with 16 countries.
“In Australia, anyone with dual nationality cannot become the Member of Parliament. They why here,” he questioned.
He said the committee’s meeting was convened in haste and that no preparations were made for it. SAMAA
