National Assembly to pick up PM on June 22

Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The government led by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has decided to elect new Prime Minister on June 22 after PM Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani was toppled from office by a conviction ruling of Supreme Court over contempt charge.

The government has decided to convene National Assembly session in this regard on Friday evening after 5pm.

According to Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Khurshid Shah, the nominations papers for the election of premiership will be submitted tomorrow.

The election of new Leader of the House will be made under NA’s rules and regulations-32 and 33, under which any member of the assembly can propose name of any member for the post of premiership with at least one member to second it.

Five minutes before the voting, all the members will be sought to gather inside the House. Then, under the modus operandi, supporters of each candidate will be asked to fall in separate lobbies and write their names, constituency number along with their signature.

The Leader of House needs 172 votes from the house with strength of 342 members. Hence, if there are more than two members and none gets the required number of votes, then, the two candidates who bagged most votes will contest each others in the run-off. The winning candidate will be asked to take oath as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

If there is only candidate vying for the post, he will be elected unopposed to the post. SAMAA
